You do not need to know the difference between every Qun Kua grade, embroidery style or groom’s outfit before booking a trial. That is what the session is for.
An outfit may look beautiful in a photograph yet feel completely different once you put it on. The colour, embroidery, proportions and overall silhouette become much easier to understand in person. For couples, it is also the best way to see whether both outfits look coordinated without appearing overly matched.
At The Red Wedding, our traditional Chinese wedding attire trials are complimentary, guided sessions of approximately 60 minutes. Whether you are choosing your outfits together, visiting as a bride on your own or looking for a groom’s outfit to complement something already selected elsewhere, we will help you find what feels right.
Who Is the Trial Session For?
A trial session is not only for couples looking for a complete matching set. You are welcome to book if:
You are a bride exploring Qun Kua, Xiu He Fu or a contemporary Sanjit-inspired look from our Chino Collection for your wedding day, tea ceremony or photoshoot.
You are a couple looking for coordinated bride-and-groom attire, such as Qun Kua and Ma Kua.
You are a groom deciding between a traditional Ma Kua and a more contemporary Tang Jacket.
Your bride already has her sanjit outfit, cheongsam or other Chinese attire from another boutique, and you need something that complements her look.
Not every couple follows the same route. Some want a fully traditional look, while others want the groom’s attire to connect naturally with what the bride has already chosen. Both are perfectly valid starting points.
What Happens During the Trial?
1. We Begin With Your Wedding Plans
We will ask about your wedding date, the occasion you are dressing for and any outfits you have already chosen. You do not need to arrive knowing the names of every style.
2. We Narrow Down Suitable Options
Rather than pulling out everything at once, we guide you towards designs, cuts and colours that suit your preferences, size and overall wedding look.
3. The Bride Tries Her Shortlisted Attire
This is where you can compare how different Qun Kua or Xiu He Fu styles sit on the body, how the embroidery looks in person and which outfit feels most like you.
4. The Groom Explores His Options
Depending on the desired look, he may try Ma Kua or Tang Jackets and compare how each option coordinates with the bride’s attire.
5. You Photograph and Compare
Photography is welcome during the session. This can be helpful because the embroidery, colour balance and proportions may look slightly different through a camera.
There is no fixed limit on how many outfits you may try, as long as it is within the appointment time.
However, the goal is not to race through as many pieces as possible. A focused comparison usually makes it easier to recognise what genuinely suits you without becoming overwhelmed by too many similar choices.

Come in or bring a pair of long trousers so you can better visualise the complete outfit.
Lighter-coloured trousers generally elevate the look of our Tang Jackets, while darker or black trousers pair beautifully with Ma Kua, especially with the traditional side slits.
Do not worry if you do not have the exact trousers yet. We will guide you on the final pairing during your session.
📸 If the Bride’s Outfit Is From Elsewhere
Bring clear photographs of what she will be wearing, whether it is a Sanjit outfit, cheongsam or another Chinese wedding outfit.
This helps us recommend colours and styles that complement her attire without forcing an exact match.
Who Should Come With You?
Bring the people whose opinions you genuinely trust.
As our space is limited, each appointment is kept to a maximum of four people, including the couple.
A smaller group also makes the experience calmer. Too many opinions can make it harder to hear your own instincts, particularly when several outfits are already strong contenders.
Can the Groom Attend Without the Bride?
Yes. Groom-only appointments are becoming increasingly common, particularly when the bride has already found her sanjit outfit or cheongsam elsewhere.
The groom can attend on his own as long as he brings clear photographs of her outfit. We can then help him explore a Ma Kua or Tang Jacket to complement her looks.
The aim is coordination—not identical colours, fabrics or embroidery.
Why We Do Not Alter Our Qun Kua
At The Red Wedding, we guide brides towards the appropriate available size and cut rather than altering the Qun Kua.
There is a cultural reason behind this. The Qun Kua is the bride’s Chinese wedding dress, or 嫁衣. In traditional belief, altering the 嫁衣 may be associated with 改嫁, an inauspicious reference to remarrying.
Not every modern family observes this belief in the same way, but it is a tradition we choose to respect.
There is also an important practical reason. Unlike many Western gowns, a Qun Kua is covered with complete, symbolic embroidery. Alterations may cut through or interrupt a dragon, phoenix, peony or another auspicious motif, affecting the integrity of the original workmanship.
A Qun Kua is also not intended to fit like a tightly tailored Western gown. Once the correct size and proportions have been selected, alterations are generally unnecessary.
What Happens After the Trial?
You do not need to decide on your appointment. You are welcome to take photographs, discuss your options and decide afterwards.
If you already feel confident about your choice, you may also confirm it during the session.
A 50% deposit is required upon confirmation, with the remaining balance payable when you collect your attire.
Because the attire is selected in the appropriate size and is not altered, another fitting is generally unnecessary if there are no significant changes to your weight. Once your booking is confirmed, you can simply wait to collect your attire nearer your wedding date.

We recommend booking your trial around three to six months before your wedding, especially if you are getting married during a popular wedding period.
What Sizes Are Available?
Our bridal collection generally caters to approximately UK sizes 6 to 20, depending on the individual design and cut.
For grooms, selected designs are available from sizes S to 4XL. Larger sizes may also be specially ordered on a purchase basis.
During your trial, we will guide you towards options that fit and flatter you comfortably.
Are the Attires Available for Both Rental and Purchase?
Yes. We offer both rental and purchase options.
What Is Included With an Attire Rental?
Every attire rental includes one complimentary accessory rental. We will help you choose a suitable accessory to complete your look during the trial.
